Racism, sexism, police brutality and abuse of power have all caused a lot of pain and suffering throughout the ages, and in many countries. Rational solutions to these problems often involve appealing to human values, sense of decency, justice, religious values, etc.
Beyond these ethical and moral reasons, there are also other very rational and some financially compelling reasons to address problems such as racism and the like.
We live in a knowledge economy!
Data is now more valuable than oil (this was true even before covid19). However, our economic thinking is still based on limited land, food and oil resource thinking; and we are still predisposed (consciously or subconsciously) to play the game of zero sum politics.
I define knowledge as not just technical know-how; but also medical know-how, IQ, EQ, cultural understanding, physical / emotional wellbeing, etc. It is fundamentally different compared to other traditional resources. If someone else has less knowledge, it does not imply that you have more. The more knowledge you have (as individuals and groups) the faster it is going to grow.
Thus the cost of racism, is also
- Economic and financial
- Health and wellbeing
- Safety
- Security
- Happiness
Knowledge also can’t be controlled like traditional resources. You need to win over the hearts and minds of the people who possess this knowledge, and create a culture where this knowledge can thrive.
The Countries, Communities and Companies that judge people by the content of their character, and provide the opportunity for all people to live to their full potential will succeed. The ones that don’t will fall to mediocrity in the very near future, and will eventually fail.
Stop the zero-sum games! Understand knowledge and time are the most valuable assets!
